Assam BJP MLA Manab Deka on Monday said the recent floods in the state were caused by exceptionally heavy rainfall rather than the usual riverine flooding pattern. He claimed that some areas recorded rainfall levels between 400 and 500 per cent above normal, resulting in widespread flooding even in regions traditionally considered less vulnerable to inundation.

Speaking to reporters in Guwahati, Deka said the recent disaster was different from previous flood situations in Assam as several affected areas were located on higher ground and had historically remained outside major flood zones. He said the unprecedented rainfall led to water accumulation in these regions, causing extensive damage to lives and property.

Deka expressed concern over the impact of the floods, stating that several people lost their lives and significant property damage was reported. He also praised the public response during the crisis, highlighting the efforts of people from different sections of society who came forward to provide relief and support to affected communities.

Addressing a political controversy over Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s remarks regarding the participation of Agriculture Minister Keshab Mahanta’s daughter in a student protest in New Delhi, Deka said citizens have the constitutional right to express their views peacefully. However, he stressed that protests should remain within the limits of responsible democratic expression.

The BJP MLA also commented on the Centre’s decision to establish a high-powered task force on examination reforms under Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani. He welcomed the move, describing Nilekani as an experienced administrator whose work in digital infrastructure could help bring improvements to India’s examination system.

Deka further supported proposed amendments to the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, saying stronger measures against examination malpractice would help protect the credibility of competitive exams. He said reforms aimed at improving transparency, efficiency, and fairness would benefit students across the country.
