The Arunachal Pradesh government has sealed 15 mosque sites in the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR) following concerns raised by indigenous groups over alleged unauthorised settlements and possible demographic changes in the state. The action was taken after authorities identified the structures as lacking required approvals, according to official statements.
The move comes amid sustained campaigning by the Arunachal Pradesh Indigenous Youth Organisation (APIYO), which has been demanding action against what it describes as illegal encroachments and unauthorised religious constructions. The group had earlier enforced a 24-hour bandh in the capital region and warned of further agitation if its demands were not addressed.
State government spokesperson and Education Minister P.D. Sona said the issue was first raised during a meeting between APIYO representatives and Chief Minister Pema Khandu in January. Following the discussion, district authorities were instructed to examine the matter, leading to a survey that identified 15 unauthorised mosque structures in the Capital Complex area.

According to Sona, legal procedures were completed before authorities sealed or vacated 12 of the identified structures. The remaining three cases were later reviewed in a follow-up meeting between the Chief Minister and APIYO leaders on June 1, after which action was also taken against those sites.
The state government has stated that concerns related to illegal immigration, demographic shifts and protection of indigenous tribal identity are being addressed through administrative and legal measures. Officials also noted that broader discussions are ongoing regarding the regulation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system and strengthening safeguards for indigenous communities while ensuring compliance with the law.
