Around 50 residents of Ahmedabad’s Ghatlodia area fell ill after reportedly consuming contaminated drinking water, following a suspected mixing of drainage water with the local supply pipeline, according to civic officials.
The incident, which came to light four days ago, affected nine residential societies in the locality. Health authorities said several residents began experiencing symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting after receiving what they described as dirty or foul-smelling tap water at their homes. Of those affected, 11 individuals were admitted to hospitals and are currently reported to be in stable condition.
Officials from the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) stated that an initial investigation indicated a breakdown in water and drainage infrastructure led to the contamination. According to civic authorities, the issue was identified and repaired shortly after it was reported on May 30, preventing further spread of the contamination.

Medical Officer of Health at AMC, Dr Bhavin Solanki, confirmed that health teams were immediately deployed to the affected area. He said residents from multiple housing societies reported gastrointestinal symptoms, prompting rapid medical response measures, including door-to-door screenings and field treatment through mobile medical units.
The civic body has deployed four medical vans and around 40 health teams in the Ghatlodia area to monitor residents and provide necessary treatment. Officials added that surveillance and health checks are continuing to ensure that no new cases emerge and that the situation remains under control.
While local residents have claimed that “hundreds” of people may have been affected, AMC Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani said municipal medical teams had documented around 50 cases so far. Authorities have maintained that the situation is stabilising after immediate repair work on the damaged pipeline and intensified monitoring in the locality.
