Union Home Minister Amit Shah has ordered the formation of a multi-sectoral central team to address the escalating natural disasters in Himachal Pradesh, where cloudbursts, flash floods, landslides, and heavy rainfall have caused widespread devastation. The team, comprising experts from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Central Building Research Institute (CBRI) Roorkee, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) Pune, a geologist, and IIT Indore, will assess the crisis, following a high-level meeting highlighting the state’s increasing losses in lives, infrastructure, and livelihoods.
Additionally, an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) is already on the ground from July 18-21, conducting firsthand damage assessments without awaiting a state memorandum. The central government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has committed Rs 2006.40 crore for 2023 disaster recovery, with Rs 451.44 crore released on July 7, and Rs 198.80 crore from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) on June 18. Thirteen National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, alongside Army and Air Force support, are aiding relief efforts.
