Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis declared on Saturday that the state government will mobilise every available resource and expedite all pending clearances to ensure the majestic Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Memorial at the historic Indu Mill land in Dadar, Mumbai, stands fully completed by 6 December 2026, exactly on the 70th Mahaparinirvan Diwas of the chief architect of the Indian Constitution.
Addressing a large gathering at Chaityabhoomi during the solemn observance of the 69th death anniversary, the Chief Minister emphasised that construction activity is currently in full swing across the 4.84-hectare site and reiterated the administration’s unwavering resolve to overcome past delays, positioning the memorial as a global pilgrimage centre for millions who revere Dr Ambedkar as the ultimate symbol of equality and justice.
Envisaged as a serene ‘Shanti Sthala’, the complex will feature a towering 350-foot bronze-clad statue of Dr Ambedkar visible from miles away, meticulously landscaped gardens depicting pivotal phases of his life, a state-of-the-art 1,000-seat auditorium, a research library housing rare manuscripts, multiple lecture and conference halls, a dedicated vipassana meditation centre, an expansive Parikrama Path for circumambulation, and comprehensive visitor amenities including underground parking.

The protracted timeline of the project has repeatedly invited criticism, most recently from NCP (SP) working president Supriya Sule, who, after paying floral tributes at Chaityabhoomi, pointedly questioned why multibillion-rupee expressways and coastal roads are delivered ahead of schedule while a monument representing the aspirations of crores of Dalits and marginalised communities continues to languish, demanding immediate accountability from the state government.
With lakhs of devotees converging at the nearby seafront memorial where Dr Ambedkar was cremated in 1956, the Chief Minister’s categorical 2026 deadline has generated fresh optimism that the long-cherished dream, first conceived decades ago after sustained agitation by Ambedkarite organisations, will finally materialise into a monumental tribute befitting the unparalleled legacy of India’s greatest social reformer and constitutional visionary.
