Election officials on Friday visited the ancestral residence of Nobel Laureate Economist Amartya Sen in Bolpur, Birbhum district, to collect documents as part of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal, according to a family member.
The officials visited Pratichi, Sen’s ancestral home, and gathered documents required for verification under the SIR exercise. These included Sen’s Aadhaar card details, voter identity card number, and the death certificate of his mother, Amita Sen, who was previously listed as a voter at the address.
In addition to identity-related documents, officials also collected a written authorisation letter in which Amartya Sen appointed his cousin, Shantabhanu Sen, to appear on his behalf for any SIR-related hearing. The economist is currently in the United States and was not present during the visit.

Family members said the visit was conducted in a routine manner and that the requested documents were handed over without incident. The SIR process involves verification and updating of electoral rolls to ensure accuracy, particularly in cases involving changes in residence, death of voters, or long-term absence from the country.
The Special Intensive Revision has been underway across the state, with election authorities conducting door-to-door verification and document collection to address discrepancies in voter lists. The exercise has drawn public attention due to visits to prominent residences and scrutiny of legacy voter entries.
Officials have maintained that the process is administrative in nature and applies uniformly to all eligible voters. Further steps, if required, will be communicated to authorised representatives, election authorities said, as the revision process continues ahead of upcoming electoral timelines.
