Flight operations at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport were disrupted on Monday after a protest by employees of the government-owned ground handling agency Air India Air Transport Services Limited (AIASL) led to delays in several Air India and Air India Express services. The agitation, centred on demands including wage revision, temporarily affected ground handling operations before employees resumed work later in the day.
According to airline officials, the industrial action by a section of AIASL employees impacted airport operations, though the full extent of delays was not immediately disclosed. Air India stated that its airport teams were coordinating with all stakeholders to minimise passenger inconvenience and restore normal operations as quickly as possible.
AIASL, which provides ground handling services to Air India Group carriers as well as several domestic and international airlines at Mumbai airport and other airports across India, confirmed that the situation was brought under control after discussions with management. The company said employees returned to work after receiving an assurance that their demands would be reviewed.

AIASL Chief Executive Officer Rambabu described the incident as a “silent morcha” by a section of employees, adding that the management had requested the workers to formally submit their demands for further discussion. He said the company would examine the representations in line with existing policies and address them through appropriate channels.
The ground handling agency plays a critical role in airport operations across India, servicing around 80 airlines at 84 airports and handling hundreds of flights daily. At Mumbai airport alone, disruptions in such services can quickly cascade into delays for multiple carriers, highlighting the operational sensitivity of labour-related issues in aviation infrastructure.
