Air India Express on Saturday operated the first international commercial flight of its newly inducted, fully custom-configured Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft, marking a significant step in its fleet modernisation programme. The inaugural overseas service was operated by aircraft VT-RNT on the New Delhi–Muscat route, offering passengers a glimpse into the airline’s next-generation narrow-body experience.
The 180-seat, all-economy aircraft features ergonomically designed seats with enhanced cushioning, improved legroom, and fast-charging power outlets at every seat. Passenger comfort has been further enhanced with larger overhead bins, quieter cabin acoustics, onboard ovens for hot “Gourmair” meals, and Boeing’s Sky Interior with advanced mood lighting.
The aircraft’s registration, VT-RNT, pays tribute to the late Ratan Tata, former Chairman Emeritus of the Tata Group. Air India Express said the dedicated livery and call sign commemorate his legacy, leadership, and contribution to Indian aviation following the airline’s transition to Tata Group ownership.

Crew members onboard highlighted operational and passenger-focused upgrades, including modernised galley equipment and improved in-flight service capabilities. Cabin crew described the aircraft as more spacious and technologically advanced, offering a distinctly modern flying experience compared to earlier-generation aircraft.
VT-RNT is the 51st Boeing 737-8 MAX inducted by Air India Express and the first to feature the airline’s new cabin and branding philosophy integrated directly at the manufacturing stage. Delivered directly from Boeing’s Seattle facility, the aircraft represents the airline’s first international deployment of a “line-fit” aircraft, as opposed to previously inducted “white-tail” jets retrofitted post-delivery.
Air India Express officials said the induction signals a strategic shift toward factory-customised aircraft as part of its long-term growth and transformation plan. With a fleet exceeding 100 aircraft and a pending order of 140 custom-configured Boeing jets, the airline aims to strengthen its position as India’s largest Boeing operator while expanding international connectivity, particularly on high-demand routes like Muscat serving the Indian diaspora.
