The resignation of Rahul Mamkootathil as president of the Kerala Youth Congress has sparked a political firestorm, with the All India Congress Committee (AICC) asserting that no formal complaints have been received against the Palakkad MLA despite allegations of misbehavior from a Malayalam actress. AICC General Secretary Deepa Dasmunshi, addressing reporters in Thrissur on Saturday, clarified that Mamkootathil’s exit from the party post was a voluntary decision driven by moral grounds, not a response to any official grievance.
“No complaint has been lodged with the Congress, the police, or any family against Rahul Mamkootathil,” Dasmunshi stated, dismissing media reports of multiple allegations as unverified. “This chapter is closed. He resigned on his own, and we stand by moral values.” She emphasized that no FIR has been filed, and the issue does not involve legal action, countering demands from the CPI(M) and BJP for Mamkootathil’s resignation as MLA. Dasmunshi also took a swipe at rival parties, urging them to address similar allegations against their own leaders.
The controversy erupted when actress Rini Ann George accused a “young leader” from a prominent political party of misbehavior, prompting protests by the CPI(M)-aligned Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and BJP activists. Mamkootathil, facing an internal Congress inquiry, announced his resignation as Youth Congress president on Thursday, citing personal accountability. “I have clarified my position, and my decision reflects the values of the Congress,” he said in a statement.

Dasmunshi, after discussions with Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president K Sudhakaran, reiterated that no formal complaints exist, and the party considers the matter resolved. However, the opposition’s relentless protests and public outcry have kept the spotlight on Mamkootathil, raising questions about political accountability and the handling of allegations in Kerala’s charged political landscape. As the Congress defends its stance, the focus now shifts to whether Mamkootathil can retain his MLA seat amid ongoing scrutiny and public pressure.
