Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday launched the Sanskrit Heritage Model and Platform at The Madras Sanskrit College in Mylapore, Chennai, in association with Articul8, highlighting the potential of artificial intelligence to make India’s literary and linguistic heritage more accessible to people across the world. The initiative seeks to use modern technology to help users engage with classical Sanskrit works and explore the country’s extensive manuscript traditions.
Speaking at the launch, Ms. Sitharaman emphasised the need to use AI to help ordinary people navigate and understand great literary works, including those of celebrated Sanskrit poet Kalidasa. She said technological tools could make complex and historically significant texts easier to access, interpret and explore, allowing a wider audience to engage with India’s intellectual and cultural traditions without requiring specialised knowledge of classical languages.
The Finance Minister said such efforts could help make India’s literary treasures accessible to everyone, anywhere in the world and at any time. By combining language technology with heritage resources, platforms of this nature could support readers, researchers, students and others interested in accessing texts that have traditionally been available mainly through specialised institutions, scholars or physical archival collections.

Ms. Sitharaman also pointed to the possible use of artificial intelligence in studying the historical spread of Indian languages, including Tamil and Sanskrit. She suggested that AI could potentially help identify the extent to which these languages travelled across regions by examining evidence contained in manuscripts, palm-leaf records and copper plates. Such an approach could assist researchers in organising and analysing large volumes of historical material that may otherwise be difficult to study systematically.
The reference to manuscripts, palm leaves and copper plates underlined the importance of documentary evidence in understanding the development and geographical reach of Indian languages. These records contain information relating to literature, administration, scholarship, religion and social life across different periods. AI-based tools could potentially help catalogue, compare and interpret such material, while supporting efforts to preserve and make archival resources more widely available.
The launch at Madras Sanskrit College marks an effort to bring together traditional scholarship and emerging technology in the study of Sanskrit and India’s broader linguistic heritage. While the platform’s wider capabilities and future applications will depend on its development, the initiative reflects growing interest in using AI to support cultural preservation, language access and historical research. The project could provide new ways for people to explore classical texts and documentary records from India’s past.
