The office of Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee was demolished in Amtala, South 24 Parganas district, on Saturday after authorities alleged that the structure was built without an approved building plan. A demolition team arrived at the site with a bulldozer amid heavy police deployment, with officials stating that the action was taken after the office allegedly failed to respond to administrative notices.
According to district administration officials, notices were issued to Banerjee's office on June 30 and July 7 seeking explanations and documents related to construction approvals and permissions. The administration also directed the Diamond Harbour MP to appear before officials on July 15 to submit his response. Officials said no reply was received to either notice and Banerjee did not appear before the district authorities, leading to further action.
The demolition was carried out after security arrangements were put in place around the premises, according to officials involved in the operation. Authorities maintained that the action followed legal procedures related to alleged violations of construction rules. The administration has stated that stricter measures were initiated because the required explanations and documents were not provided within the given timeframe.

The Trinamool Congress strongly criticised the demolition, alleging that the action was politically motivated and accusing the BJP of engaging in "vengeful politics." In a statement, the party claimed that the matter was already pending before a court and described the demolition as an example of what it called "bulldozer culture" and political targeting. The BJP has not accepted the allegations made by the TMC.
The development comes amid political tensions in West Bengal following major changes in the state's political landscape. The Trinamool Congress has faced internal challenges after electoral setbacks, with reports of defections involving some party leaders and representatives. The party has been attempting to manage organisational issues while continuing its opposition to actions taken by authorities against its leaders.
The demolition of Abhishek Banerjee's office has added another point of confrontation between the Trinamool Congress and its political opponents. While the administration has defended the move as enforcement of building regulations, the TMC has framed it as an act of political retaliation. The matter is expected to remain a subject of legal and political debate in the coming days.
