Prime Minister Narendra Modi ceremoniously hoisted the saffron flag atop the 191-foot shikhara of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya on Tuesday, marking the formal completion of the sacred shrine. Speaking at the event, Modi described the moment as one where “the wounds of centuries are healing” and celebrated it as a revival of Indian culture reflecting the nation’s deep-rooted spiritual heritage.
The specially designed triangular saffron flag measures 10 feet by 20 feet and bears symbols rich in Hindu tradition: a radiant Sun symbolizing Lord Ram’s valour, the sacred 'Om', and the Kovidara tree, representing the dynasty of Raghu. The flag was hoisted during the auspicious “Abhijit Muhurat,” coinciding with the traditional Vivah Panchami celebration of Lord Ram and Goddess Sita’s divine union. Modi was accompanied by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel, and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath during the historic ceremony.
Addressing devotees and dignitaries, Modi reflected on the ongoing journey to reclaim India’s cultural pride. He noted how, despite gaining political independence, India had struggled to free itself from a lingering mentality of inferiority, a legacy left by colonial rule and educational policies that undermined indigenous values. Modi asserted that democracy is intrinsic to Indian heritage, countering narratives that portray it as inspired solely by foreign constitutions.

The Prime Minister emphasized the larger vision of India's future, envisioning a decade during which the country will cast off the vestiges of colonial mindset and fully embrace its cultural strength and democratic values. The flag hoisting ceremony is not only a spiritual milestone symbolizing divine protection and renewal but also a national reaffirmation of India’s civilizational identity and unity.
The event marked the culmination of a phased construction process that began with the foundation stone laying in August 2020, followed by the consecration of the temple in January 2024. The completion and the symbolic flag hoisting have ignited celebrations nationwide, as millions witness an important chapter in India’s spiritual and cultural renaissance.
