Government health schemes such as Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) and Mahatma Phule Jan Arogya Yojana are significantly improving healthcare access for patients in Amravati, officials said. The initiatives are enabling thousands of patients to receive free, high-quality treatment at the government-run Amravati Super Speciality Hospital.
According to hospital authorities, many medical procedures that would typically cost several lakhs of rupees in private hospitals are being provided free of charge under the schemes. The hospital reported that it has successfully carried out around 44,000 free surgeries this year alone under the two government programmes.
The treatments provided include 69 kidney transplants, more than 15,000 dialysis procedures, over 1,000 neurosurgeries, about 5,000 chemotherapy sessions and around 8,000 kidney stone surgeries. Officials said the schemes have removed the financial burden for patients and their families, making life-saving treatments accessible to economically weaker sections.

The hospital’s efforts have also received recognition from the Government of Maharashtra. Dean Dr Amol Narote and his team were honoured with the ‘Hridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray’ award for their contribution to public healthcare. Narote credited the success of the hospital’s work to the support provided by the government schemes.
Patients and their families expressed gratitude for the medical care they received. One family member said that a kidney transplant, which could have cost lakhs in a private facility, was completed free of cost through the programme, giving their loved one a new lease on life.
Officials also noted that the introduction of a new digital portal under the Ayushman Bharat programme has made it easier for patients to access healthcare services. With improved accessibility and transparency, the hospital is increasingly being seen as a model for how public health schemes can deliver meaningful benefits to citizens across Maharashtra.
