A balanced diet rich in essential nutrients can play an important role in supporting brain health, improving concentration and maintaining cognitive function as people age, according to neurologists. While no single food can prevent memory loss or conditions such as dementia, research suggests that a healthy eating pattern combined with good sleep, stress management and control of medical conditions can contribute to better brain performance. Dr Daanish Chhapra, Consultant Neurologist at Holy Family Hospital, Mumbai, highlighted the importance of nutrition in maintaining brain function. He explained that the brain requires a steady supply of nutrients to support processes such as memory formation, focus, mood regulation and overall cognitive health.
Experts say that diets rich in antioxidants, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals can help protect brain cells from damage and support communication between neurons. Foods that reduce inflammation and improve heart health are also considered beneficial, as cardiovascular health is closely linked with brain function. One of the key food groups recommended for brain health is fatty fish, which are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Fish such as salmon, sardines and mackerel contain nutrients that support brain structure and may help maintain cognitive abilities. Omega-3 fats are important components of brain cells and play a role in healthy brain signalling.
Nuts and seeds are another important addition to a brain-friendly diet. Almonds, walnuts, flaxseeds and chia seeds provide healthy fats, antioxidants and minerals that support brain function. Walnuts, in particular, contain plant-based omega-3 fatty acids and compounds that may help reduce oxidative stress. Fruits and vegetables, especially those rich in antioxidants, are also considered essential for long-term brain health. Berries, leafy greens and colourful vegetables contain compounds that help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. Leafy greens such as spinach and other vegetables provide vitamins linked to healthy brain ageing.

Whole grains and complex carbohydrates can also support cognitive performance by providing a steady release of energy. Since the brain relies heavily on glucose for fuel, stable blood sugar levels can help maintain concentration and mental alertness throughout the day. Dr Chhapra also emphasised the importance of maintaining overall lifestyle habits alongside healthy eating. A nutritious diet works best when combined with regular physical activity, adequate sleep and effective management of health conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure.
Protein-rich foods are also important for brain function as they provide amino acids required for the production of neurotransmitters, which are chemicals responsible for communication between brain cells. Sources such as eggs, pulses, dairy products and lean meats can be included as part of a balanced diet. Hydration is another often-overlooked factor in maintaining cognitive performance. Even mild dehydration can affect attention, memory and mental clarity. Drinking enough water throughout the day helps support normal brain processes and overall health.
Experts caution that improving brain health is not about relying on a single “superfood” but about following a consistent and balanced dietary pattern. A combination of nutrient-rich foods, regular exercise, quality sleep and healthy lifestyle choices provides the strongest foundation for maintaining memory and cognitive abilities. As people become more aware of the connection between diet and brain function, nutrition is increasingly being recognised as an important part of preventive healthcare. Making small, sustainable changes to daily eating habits can support brain health and improve overall well-being over the long term.
