Sweet potatoes are increasingly being recognised as a gut-friendly food due to their rich nutritional profile and the presence of a unique protein called yarapin. According to gastroenterologist Dr Saurabh Sethi, this naturally occurring component in sweet potatoes may support digestive health and could help people manage issues such as stomach bloating when consumed as part of a balanced diet.
Yarapin, also known as a protein found in Ipomoea batatas (sweet potato), is associated with antioxidant properties that may help reduce oxidative stress in the body. Unlike dietary fibre, yarapin does not function by adding bulk to stool or directly speeding up digestion. Instead, it may work alongside other nutrients in sweet potatoes to support overall digestive processes and gut function.
Stomach bloating commonly occurs due to several digestive factors, including excessive gas production, constipation, slow digestion, gut microbiome imbalance, overeating and consumption of high-sodium foods. Sweet potatoes contain both soluble and insoluble fibre, which can promote healthier bowel movements and support the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, potentially reducing digestive discomfort linked to poor gut balance.

He recommends consuming sweet potatoes in healthier forms such as boiled, roasted or as part of soups while avoiding excessive butter, cream or sugary toppings. Pairing them with yoghurt, vegetables or protein sources can help create a more balanced meal.
While sweet potatoes can offer digestive benefits, individual tolerance varies. People with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), those monitoring carbohydrate intake, or individuals with kidney conditions requiring potassium restrictions should be cautious about their consumption. Experts suggest that sweet potatoes should be included as part of an overall healthy eating pattern rather than viewed as a standalone remedy for bloating.
