A former software engineer who spent 14 years working at some of the world's biggest technology companies has turned a passion for cooking into a thriving business after leaving his high-paying career to launch a halal barbecue restaurant in Texas. Salahodeen Abdul-Kafi, 35, said he walked away from an annual salary of around Rs 4.25 crore (USD 450,000), choosing a path that eventually led to a restaurant generating nearly Rs 21.7 crore in revenue during its first year of operation.
Abdul-Kafi built his career at leading technology firms including Microsoft, Google, YouTube and Cruise. Despite his professional success, he said he gradually became disillusioned with the industry's focus on profits rather than creating meaningful value for society. The growing disconnect between his personal values and professional work ultimately convinced him to resign from his lucrative position in the technology sector.
After leaving San Francisco, Abdul-Kafi accepted a role at a religious non-profit organisation, taking a salary cut of more than 50 per cent. Outside of work, he began hosting dinner parties and preparing halal barbecue dishes for friends. The enthusiastic response from guests, many of whom said they had never tasted barbecue prepared in his style, encouraged him to consider turning his hobby into a business.

Motivated by the positive feedback, Abdul-Kafi opened a halal barbecue restaurant in Texas. The venture quickly gained popularity, attracting customers with its distinctive menu and authentic flavours. According to reports, the restaurant generated approximately Rs 21.7 crore in revenue within its first year, making the business a significant commercial success and validating his decision to leave the technology industry.
His journey has attracted attention as an example of professionals choosing passion and purpose over financial security. It also reflects a growing trend of experienced employees leaving established corporate careers to pursue entrepreneurial ventures based on personal interests. By identifying a niche market and building a business around quality food and customer experience, Abdul-Kafi successfully carved out a place in the competitive restaurant industry.
Although his decision involved considerable financial risk and an initial reduction in income, Abdul-Kafi's success demonstrates how determination, careful planning and confidence in one's abilities can create new opportunities beyond the corporate world. His transition from a highly paid technology executive to a successful restaurateur has become an inspiring example of entrepreneurship driven by passion rather than salary alone.
