President Droupadi Murmu will confer the National Teachers' Awards 2026 on 82 educators at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi as India observes Teachers' Day. The awardees represent different areas of education and include 48 school teachers, 21 higher education teachers and 13 trainers from the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. The awards recognise educators whose dedication, innovation and commitment have contributed to improving learning outcomes and enriching students' lives.
The National Teachers' Awards are intended to acknowledge educators who have made notable contributions to teaching and the development of their students. Short documentaries highlighting the work and achievements of each awardee will also be presented during the ceremony. The event will bring together educators from school, higher education and skill-development backgrounds, highlighting the different roles teachers play in India's education system.
The Ministry of Education said teachers do more than impart academic knowledge, describing them as people who shape minds, nurture values and contribute to the overall development of learners. The ministry also linked this year's recognition to the broader goal of developing a skilled and capable India. The award ceremony is being positioned as a tribute to educators whose work is contributing to the country's long-term educational and social progress.

President Murmu also extended her greetings to teachers across the country on the occasion. She recalled that Teachers' Day commemorates the birth anniversary of former President Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was an author, philosopher and distinguished teacher. The President paid tribute to his contribution and said teachers continue to hold an important place in shaping the country's future through their work with students.
According to the President, teachers play a vital role in identifying and nurturing talent while helping students develop strong character. She emphasised the importance of guidance and mentorship in enabling young people to realise their potential. A dedicated teacher, she said, can inspire students to pursue excellence while encouraging them to become responsible and good human beings.
President Murmu also called on teachers to continually update their knowledge and adapt to changing educational needs. She stressed the importance of embracing technology and adopting innovative teaching methods while encouraging independent thinking and curiosity among students. The National Teachers' Awards therefore serve not only as recognition for individual educators but also as a reminder of the broader role teachers play in preparing students for the future.
