IndiGo is entering a new phase of growth strategy as the airline shifts its focus from expanding market share to improving customer experience, introducing premium services, and strengthening its international presence. The move comes after the airline established itself as India’s largest carrier with more than 60 per cent share of the domestic aviation market.
In his message to shareholders in InterGlobe Aviation’s FY26 annual report, Co-founder and Managing Director Rahul Bhatia said the airline’s ambition now extends beyond remaining India’s biggest airline. He said IndiGo aims to become a globally recognised carrier known for operational excellence, innovation, and customer-focused services.
The strategic shift comes despite IndiGo reporting one of its largest annual losses. InterGlobe Aviation posted a consolidated net loss of ₹2,394 crore in FY26, even as revenue from operations increased by 5 per cent year-on-year to ₹84,962 crore. The airline believes its next stage of growth will depend on attracting higher-value passengers rather than relying only on domestic expansion.

For nearly two decades, IndiGo’s growth has been driven by affordable fares, operational efficiency, and a strong domestic network. However, with its leadership position firmly established, the airline is now looking to improve passenger loyalty and compete in premium segments through enhanced services and technology-driven solutions.
The airline has already introduced IndiGoStretch, a business-class-style offering on select domestic routes, as part of its premium travel strategy. It is also investing in digital platforms, service improvements, and aircraft expansion, including the addition of leased wide-body aircraft ahead of the arrival of Airbus A350s to support long-haul international operations.
The focus on customer experience follows a challenging period for IndiGo after major operational disruptions in late 2025. The airline faced large-scale flight cancellations after difficulties adapting to stricter Flight Duty Time Limitation rules introduced by aviation regulators. The disruption affected thousands of flights and highlighted the need for stronger operational planning and passenger service management.
Bhatia said aviation has an important role in supporting India’s economic growth by improving connectivity, boosting tourism, encouraging investment, and creating employment opportunities. With its domestic dominance already achieved, IndiGo’s future growth will depend on whether it can transform its scale advantage into a stronger global brand while maintaining the cost efficiency that made it India’s leading airline.
