Concerns have emerged online regarding the new “Pocket Money” feature introduced by Google Pay, with viral claims suggesting that tapping the feature could lead to automatic money debits. However, available information indicates that these fears are largely unfounded, and no confirmed cases of such fraud linked to the feature have been reported so far.
The Pocket Money feature is part of Google Pay’s UPI Circle system, designed to allow a primary user to grant controlled payment access to trusted individuals such as family members. This enables secondary users to make transactions even without having their own bank accounts, using the primary user’s account under strict supervision.
Social media posts have raised alarms, with some users claiming that simply clicking on the Pocket Money icon could result in unauthorised deductions or hacking attempts. These claims have spread quickly, prompting confusion and concern among users about the safety of the feature.

However, the system includes multiple layers of security and does not allow automatic debits without user consent. Primary users must actively set up the feature, add secondary users, and define permissions such as spending limits or approval requirements. Without these steps, no transaction can take place.
The feature offers two modes: full delegation, where a monthly spending limit (up to ₹15,000) is set, and partial delegation, where every transaction requires explicit approval from the primary user. Additionally, setting up the feature requires identity verification details and confirmation through a UPI PIN, further strengthening its security framework.
Experts advise users to rely on official information and avoid misinformation circulating online. While digital payment platforms should always be used cautiously, the Pocket Money feature is designed as a controlled and secure tool rather than a vulnerability, provided users follow standard safety practices and only grant access to trusted individuals.
