Jana Nayagan, starring Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay, is likely to receive its censor certificate this weekend, according to sources familiar with the development. The film, which has faced months of certification-related delays, has reportedly been cleared by the Revising Committee of the Central Board of Film Certification, potentially paving the way for its theatrical release in the coming weeks. An official announcement from the makers regarding the certification and revised release schedule is still awaited.
The film had initially completed the censor review process in December 2025, when the Examining Committee reportedly suggested certain cuts before recommending a U/A 16+ certification. Following those changes, the makers had planned to release the film on January 9, 2026. However, the certification process took an unexpected turn after one member of the Examining Committee reportedly raised objections to some scenes and submitted a complaint to CBFC chairperson Prasoon Joshi. The matter was subsequently referred to the revising committee for fresh examination.
The delay in certification eventually led the film’s director and production team to approach the Madras High Court and later the Supreme Court seeking intervention. Sources also indicated that the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct during the election period contributed to additional delays in issuing the final certificate. Producers are now reportedly waiting for the official censor clearance document before formally confirming the release date and beginning promotional activities for the film.

The film has attracted exceptional public and political attention because it features sitting Chief Minister Vijay in the lead role, making it one of the most anticipated Tamil film releases in recent years. The political rise of Vijay since the commencement of the project has also added symbolic significance to the film’s title, which translates to “People’s Leader.” Fans have reportedly requested that the actor’s traditional “Thalapathy Vijay” title card in the film be replaced with “Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu,” reflecting his transition from cinema superstar to political leader.
Speaking recently about the prolonged delay, KVN Productions founder Venkat K. Narayana said the production house has been following all legal and procedural requirements while awaiting the final certificate. He explained that the film was initially expected to clear certification smoothly but later encountered complications after the complaint emerged from within the examining panel itself. According to him, the producers were surprised when the certificate was withheld despite the committee initially approving the film.
Venkat also stated that the matter became more complex because the objection reportedly came from a member who had originally consented to the certification recommendation. He said the production team immediately approached the revising committee and has since been cooperating with all formalities required under the certification process. With reports now suggesting that the film has cleared the revision stage, expectations are growing that Jana Nayagan could finally head to theaters soon after months of uncertainty surrounding one of Tamil cinema’s most closely watched releases.
