Sangeetha Sornalingam, wife of Actor-politician Vijay, has filed for divorce in a Tamil Nadu court after 26 years of marriage, marking a significant personal development in the life of one of Tamil cinema’s most prominent figures. The couple, who married on August 25, 1999, have two children, Jason Sanjay and Divya Shasha. The filing has drawn widespread public attention given Vijay’s stature in the film industry and his recent political transition.
Sangeetha has largely maintained a low public profile throughout her marriage, rarely appearing at film events or interacting with the media despite her husband’s immense popularity. Over the years, she has chosen to focus on family life, ensuring that their children grew up away from constant public scrutiny. Her absence from certain high-profile events in recent years had previously sparked speculation, though those rumours were later dismissed at the time.
Born and raised in the United Kingdom, Sangeetha comes from a family with Sri Lankan Tamil roots. Reports indicate that her father was a Tamil industrialist who had settled in the UK. Her international upbringing and multicultural background added a distinct dimension to her personal story, though she consistently stayed away from the limelight even as Vijay’s career continued to soar.

The couple’s relationship reportedly began in the late 1990s after the success of Vijay’s breakthrough film Poove Unakkaga. Sangeetha, then residing in London, is said to have travelled to Chennai to congratulate him. Their meeting reportedly left a strong impression, leading to family introductions and eventually a formal proposal with the consent of both families. Though Vijay is a Christian and Sangeetha is a Hindu, they opted for a Hindu wedding ceremony followed by a reception in Chennai.
Throughout their marriage, Sangeetha avoided public attention, even skipping major film-related events such as the promotional launch of Varisu, which had briefly fuelled separation rumours. Despite periodic speculation, the couple had not publicly addressed any marital discord until the recent court filing surfaced. The divorce petition now formalises what had remained private for years.
Meanwhile, Vijay is preparing for the release of his upcoming Tamil film Jana Nayagan, which he has described as his final project before dedicating himself fully to politics through his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. As his career transitions from cinema to public life, this personal development adds a new chapter to the journey of the actor widely known among fans as "Thalapathy".
