Actor Ram Kapoor has opened up about the difficult final days of his father, Anil “Billy” Kapoor, and the emotions he experienced after his death following a prolonged battle with cancer. In a recent conversation with Nayandeep Rakshit, the actor reflected on his father’s illness, the request he made during his final days and the promise Ram chose to honour.

Anil, a businessman, was first diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at the age of 63. Doctors considered the cancer inoperable, but he underwent 18 rounds of chemotherapy and eventually entered remission. He was able to live for another decade before the disease returned when he was 73, during the COVID-19 pandemic, while he was in Singapore.

Ram recalled that his father eventually asked him to help him die, a request that initially left the actor stunned. According to Ram, his father did not want to face his final moments alone and asked him to remain by his side in the ICU. With no further treatment available, Anil wanted Ram to hold his hand and remain with him as he faced the end of his life.

The actor described the period as emotionally difficult as he watched his father cope with the effects of advanced cancer. Ram recalled the pain and confusion his father experienced and the responsibility of being closely involved in his final days. He also remembered his father’s wishes regarding his funeral and his determination to maintain dignity through the final stage of his illness.

Ram explained that his father’s death brought him relief because it meant his suffering had ended. Rather than viewing his reaction as conventional grief, he felt happiness that his father was no longer in pain. The experience also changed his own understanding of death, which he described as something he no longer feared in the same way after witnessing his father face it with acceptance.

The decision to honour his father’s wishes, however, affected Ram’s relationship with other members of his family. He revealed that his mother and sister have not spoken to him for more than five years and only learned about their father’s wishes after his death. Despite the resulting family rift, Ram maintained that he does not regret standing by his father and considers fulfilling his wishes during his final moments one of the most meaningful things he could do for him. The actor has since continued his work across films and streaming projects, including recent appearances in Mistry and Jolly LLB 3.
