Choreographer and actor Prabhu Deva has recalled how global pop legend Michael Jackson became one of the biggest influences of his artistic journey, shaping his identity as a dancer from a young age. In a reflective interview, Prabhu Deva said his admiration began when he watched Jackson’s iconic Thriller on a rented VCR cassette, an experience he described as life-changing. At the time, he was undergoing Bharatanatyam training, and the contrast between classical Indian dance and Jackson’s electrifying style left a lasting impression on him.
Prabhu Deva said access to entertainment was limited in those years, making the viewing even more memorable. He remembered families often renting VCR players for a single evening to watch films or music videos. During one such session, he came across Thriller for the first time. According to him, Jackson’s movements, stage presence, and originality were unlike anything he had seen before. The performance inspired him to explore new forms of movement while continuing his classical training, blending discipline with innovation.
The celebrated Indian choreographer later had the rare opportunity to meet Michael Jackson in Mumbai in 1996, a moment he has often described as unforgettable. He also shared the stage with the King of Pop at Munich’s Olympic Stadium in 1999, marking one of the defining highlights of his international career. Despite those landmark encounters, Prabhu Deva said one of his most treasured memories remains undocumented, existing only in his mind because no photograph captured the special moment.
