Malayalam cinema icon Mohanlal expressed profound gratitude and humility upon arriving in Kerala on September 21, 2025, after being named the recipient of the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2023. Speaking to reporters at Kochi airport, the superstar dedicated the honour—the country’s highest recognition in cinema—to the Malayalam film industry, crediting its audience and his 48-year career for shaping his legacy. “I wish for more good things to come for the industry, and I hope this recognition inspires the new generation,” he said, visibly moved.
The Information and Broadcasting Ministry announced the award on September 20, lauding Mohanlal’s “iconic contribution to Indian cinema” as an actor, director, and producer, following the recommendation of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award Selection Committee. The accolade, named after the pioneer of Indian filmmaking, celebrates his five-decade journey, marked by over 400 films, five National Awards, and nine Kerala State Film Awards. Known for versatile roles in films like Drishyam, Vanaprastham, and Kireedam, Mohanlal has elevated Malayalam cinema’s global stature while contributing to Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi films.
“This is immense happiness,” Mohanlal told reporters, thanking God, his audience, his parents, and the nation. “I’m grateful to everyone who has been a part of my journey,” he added, reflecting on colleagues who supported his rise from a debutant in 1978’s Thiranottam to a cultural icon. He extended “love and prayers” to collaborators, emphasising the collective effort behind his success.
