Chennai Super Kings have come under criticism despite their victory over Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026, with former CSK batter Subramaniam Badrinath questioning the franchise’s team selection strategy and accusing them of giving preference to players because of their massive auction price tags.
CSK had grabbed attention during the IPL 2026 auction after spending Rs 14.20 crore each on uncapped Indian youngsters Kartik Sharma and Prashant Veer. However, neither player has managed to deliver consistently this season, with both frequently moving in and out of the playing XI. The latest controversy emerged after CSK decided to leave out in-form spinner Akeal Hosein and bring back Prashant Veer for the clash against Mumbai Indians.
Reacting strongly to the move, Badrinath suggested that CSK appeared more focused on justifying their expensive auction buys rather than selecting players based on form and balance. He said the franchise did not seem to be following a proper process and claimed certain players were getting opportunities mainly because huge amounts had been invested in them during the auction.

Badrinath was particularly critical of the decision to bench Akeal Hosein, who has impressed with six wickets in just four matches this season, including a four-wicket haul earlier in the tournament. He questioned why Prashant Veer was trusted to bowl during the powerplay despite having little IPL experience, especially when an in-form spinner like Hosein was available in the squad.
Although CSK eventually defeated Mumbai Indians comfortably, Veer struggled to make an impact with the ball, conceding 25 runs in his two overs without taking a wicket. Meanwhile, Kartik Sharma managed to justify his price tag to some extent by scoring the first half-century of his IPL career. Despite the win, the debate surrounding CSK’s selection policy and their handling of expensive uncapped players continues to grow among fans and former cricketers alike.
