Mahindra has commenced road testing of its upcoming Vision S compact SUV in India, with recent spy shots revealing key design elements and confirming its role as a direct rival to Tata's newly launched Sierra. Unveiled as a concept in August 2025 alongside Vision T, X, and SXT during the Freedom NU event, the Vision S is the first model from Mahindra's new multi-energy modular NU IQ platform to enter testing. The heavily camouflaged prototypes showcase a boxy silhouette, upright fascia, flat bonnet, round headlamps with vertically slatted grille, and integrated LED DRLs reminiscent of the Thar Roxx. A radar module on the lower grille hints at Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), while high ground clearance supported by large wheels, high-profile tires, and long-travel suspension underscores its rugged appeal.
The rear profile features vertically stacked rectangular tail lamps, a flat windscreen, a simple bumper, and a tailgate-mounted spare wheel, enhancing practicality for off-road adventures. Interior glimpses from earlier spies reveal a modern cabin with dual 12.3-inch screens, a panoramic sunroof, a three-spoke dual-tone steering wheel, uniquely styled AC vents, and physical buttons for controls. Expected features include seat heating, hill descent control, traction control, differential lock, off-road modes, terrain selector, dual-zone climate control, and a flat-floor design for improved spaciousness—unique for an ICE SUV. The NU IQ platform supports lengths from 3.99 m to 4.32 m, FWD/AWD, and a 5-link rear independent suspension for superior ride comfort on varied terrains.
Powertrain details remain unconfirmed, but the Vision S is anticipated to launch initially with internal combustion engines like a 1.2-liter turbo-petrol and 1.5-liter turbo-diesel, paired with manual/automatic transmissions. Future variants could include hybrids and full electrics, aligning with the platform's flexibility and Mahindra's multi-energy strategy. Priced aggressively under Rs 11 lakh for base models, it aims to compete not just with the Tata Sierra (launched November 25, 2025, starting at Rs 11.49 lakh) but also with the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and Maruti Grand Vitara in the midsize/lifestyle SUV segment.

Production models from the NU IQ lineup are slated for 2027, with Vision S potentially badged as a "baby Scorpio" to leverage Mahindra's rugged heritage. The testing phase, including high-altitude trials, signals Mahindra's focus on durability across Indian conditions. This development intensifies the SUV rivalry between Mahindra and Tata, promising consumers bold styling, advanced tech, and versatile powertrains in a competitive price bracket. Enthusiasts await more reveals as camouflaged mules continue to surface on public roads.
