Indian Women Wrestlers Power Through to U20 World Championship Semifinals
Three Indian wrestlers advance to U20 World semis in Bulgaria.
India’s women wrestlers continued their stellar performance at the U20 World Wrestling Championships in Samokov, Bulgaria, on August 21, 2025, with Shruti, Saarika, and Kaajal securing semifinal berths in their respective weight categories.
The trio’s commanding displays bolstered India’s medal prospects, following Tapasya’s gold in the 57kg category and Srishti’s silver in the 68kg. Reena (55kg) and Priya (76kg) also advanced to their finals, positioning India for a potential haul of medals, while Greco-Roman wrestler Suraj reached the 60kg semifinals, though Prince fell in the 82kg quarterfinals.
In the 50kg category, Shruti showcased resilience, edging out Violetta Biriukova 5-4 in the pre-quarterfinals before dominating Poland’s Anna Yatskevych 4-0 to reach the semifinals. Saarika, competing in the 53kg class, was unstoppable, defeating Sevval Cayir 12-2 by technical superiority and shutting out China’s Tianyu Sun 8-0 in the quarterfinals; she now faces Ukraine’s Anastasia Polska.
Kaajal, in the 72kg category, delivered a 15-4 technical superiority win over Emili Mihaylova Apostolova and a 7-0 victory against Kyrgyzstan’s Kaiyrkul Sharshebaeva, setting up a semifinal clash with American Jasmine Dolores Robinson for a shot at the gold.
India’s strong showing reflects the growing prowess of its young wrestlers on the global stage. With Reena and Priya poised for gold medal bouts later on August 21, and the semifinalists aiming to join them, the nation’s contingent is demonstrating remarkable depth and skill.
The performances in Bulgaria highlight India’s rising dominance in women’s wrestling, with the potential for multiple podium finishes at this prestigious championship.
