Shreyas Iyer Blames Bowling as Punjab Kings Suffer First IPL 2026 Loss to Rajasthan Royals
PBKS lose first IPL match to RR; skipper Shreyas Iyer cites poor bowling execution.
Punjab-based Punjab Kings tasted defeat for the first time in the IPL 2026 after going down to Rajasthan Royals by six wickets in Mullanpur. The result ended Punjab’s unbeaten start to the campaign and gave rivals a major statement win. Despite putting up a challenging total on the scoreboard, Punjab were unable to stop Rajasthan’s powerful batting unit from completing the chase. The loss was disappointing for a side that had built strong momentum early in the tournament and looked among the most balanced teams this season.
After the match, captain Shreyas Iyer openly admitted that his team did not execute well enough with the ball. Speaking honestly about the defeat, he said Punjab fell short in their bowling plans and failed to control key moments of the chase. His comments clearly indicated frustration with how the bowlers handled pressure situations after the batters had given the side a competitive platform. Rather than blaming luck or conditions, Iyer focused on execution, suggesting that better discipline and smarter decisions could have changed the outcome.
Punjab Kings had many positives with the bat, posting a total that would normally be considered match-winning in T20 cricket. Their batting lineup once again showed depth, aggression, and the ability to score quickly against quality opposition. However, modern T20 cricket often demands complete performances, and even large totals can become vulnerable when bowlers miss their lengths or fail to contain momentum. That is exactly what happened as Rajasthan’s chase gathered pace and Punjab gradually lost control of the contest despite beginning as favourites after the first innings.

The chase was led brilliantly by Yashasvi Jaiswal, Donovan Ferreira, and young talent Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who attacked from different phases of the innings. Their fearless strokeplay kept the required rate manageable and prevented Punjab from building sustained pressure. Every time Punjab seemed to have a chance to return, Rajasthan responded with boundaries and smart running. The successful chase highlighted Rajasthan’s composure while also exposing Punjab’s inability to close out important overs.
Even after the defeat, Iyer remained calm and positive in his overall assessment. He described the result as a learning experience and reminded everyone that one loss does not define a long tournament. Punjab Kings still remain one of the stronger sides in the competition and have enough quality to bounce back quickly. The captain’s reaction suggested that the team will focus on correcting bowling errors, regaining confidence, and returning stronger in their next outing as the race for playoff positions intensifies.
