Dinesh Karthik Explains Why England’s Test Coach Search Faces IPL Challenge
Karthik highlights IPL conflicts affecting England’s Test coaching search.
England’s search for a new Test cricket head coach could face a major challenge due to scheduling conflicts involving the Indian Premier League (IPL), according to former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced that Brendon McCullum will step down from his role as England Men’s Test head coach while continuing to oversee the white-ball teams.
McCullum’s departure marks the end of a four-year tenure during which England’s Test side underwent a major transformation under the aggressive “Bazball” approach. His leadership helped the team achieve several memorable victories and brought a new attacking identity to English Test cricket. However, the ECB believes a change is needed as the team prepares for major challenges, including the upcoming Ashes series.
One of the names being considered for the Test coaching position is Andy Flower, who is currently the head coach of IPL champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Flower has earned widespread respect in international cricket for his tactical knowledge and previous coaching success. However, Karthik, who works alongside Flower at RCB, believes the demanding cricket calendar could make it difficult for him to accept the England role.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Karthik said Flower would be an excellent candidate but questioned whether he would have enough time to manage both responsibilities. He pointed out that Flower already has commitments with RCB and that England may struggle with his availability during important Test assignments. Karthik highlighted that missing players or staff members during key matches has already created concerns, and a similar situation involving the head coach could become a major issue.
England are expected to appoint a new Test coach before their upcoming three-match series against Pakistan, which is part of the World Test Championship schedule. The team recently suffered a 1-2 Test series defeat against New Zealand but had strong performances in limited-overs cricket, including a 4-0 T20I series victory over India. ECB chief executive Richard Gould praised McCullum’s contribution, saying the coach had brought fresh energy to the Test team and that the board now believes a new direction is needed ahead of future challenges.
