Ruturaj Gaikwad Says Injuries And Absences Derailed CSK’s IPL 2026 Campaign

CSK skipper points to depleted squad for struggles.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has attributed the franchise’s disappointing IPL 2026 campaign largely to a series of injuries that disrupted team balance throughout the season. Despite showing signs of improvement compared to the previous year, CSK finished eighth in the standings and missed the playoffs for a third consecutive season. Gaikwad argued that the absence of several key players significantly affected the team's performance and consistency across the tournament.

Speaking about the challenges faced by the squad, Gaikwad said injuries to crucial members of the playing XI created setbacks that were difficult to overcome. He pointed out that even successful teams would struggle under similar circumstances, drawing a comparison with IPL 2026 champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). According to the CSK skipper, removing three or four major players from any title-winning side would inevitably impact results, regardless of the team's overall strength and reputation.

CSK entered the season already dealing with major personnel concerns. Veteran wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni, fast bowler Nathan Ellis, and young talent Ayush Mhatre were among those sidelined by injuries. The team's difficulties were further compounded as players such as Khaleel Ahmed, Jamie Overton, and Dewald Brevis also missed significant portions of the campaign. The constant changes to the playing combination made it challenging for the franchise to maintain momentum in a highly competitive tournament.

Gaikwad acknowledged that expectations surrounding CSK remain exceptionally high due to the franchise’s sustained success over the years. The five-time champions have built a reputation for consistency, making any underwhelming season subject to intense scrutiny. However, the captain stressed that every successful team experiences difficult phases and that external observers often overlook the impact injuries and unavailable personnel can have on a season’s outcome.

Despite the disappointing finish, Gaikwad expressed optimism about the team's progress in 2026. He noted that CSK performed better than they did in IPL 2025, when the franchise finished at the bottom of the table. The team secured two additional victories this season and remained in playoff contention for a significant period. Contributions from players including Sanju Samson provided encouragement and demonstrated the squad's potential when key performers were available.

However, CSK’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages ultimately faded after a poor finish to the league phase, with the team ending the season on a three-match losing streak. While the campaign did not produce the desired results, Gaikwad believes the lessons learned from two challenging seasons will help the franchise rebuild and return stronger in IPL 2027. The captain remains confident that improvements in squad stability and player availability can help CSK regain its position among the league’s leading contenders.
