Irfan Pathan Flags Technical Issue in Sanju Samson's Batting Technique
Irfan Pathan identifies technical flaw in struggling batter Sanju Samson.
Sanju Samson has come under increasing scrutiny following a string of disappointing performances in the ongoing T20 season, with former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan pointing out a technical flaw in the wicketkeeper-batter's game. Samson has managed scores of 5, 0 and 1 in his last three innings, including two matches against Ireland and the opening T20I against England. While there has been no official indication from the Indian team management regarding his place, calls for changes in the batting line-up have continued to grow.
Speaking during a broadcast on JioHotstar, Pathan said Samson's batting technique leaves him vulnerable to deliveries outside the off stump. According to the former cricketer, Samson's bat face tends to remain closed during his stroke play, making it difficult for him to control shots on the off side. Pathan explained that bowlers have identified this weakness and are consistently targeting the channel outside the off stump to force mistakes.
The recent dismissals have reflected that pattern. In the first T20I against Ireland, Samson attempted an attacking shot and inside-edged the ball onto his stumps. During the opening T20I against England, he chased a delivery outside the off stump and was caught at third man. The repeated nature of the dismissals has intensified discussions about whether India should continue with Samson or look at other options for the remaining matches in the series.

The strongest alternative being discussed is young Rajasthan Royals batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who enjoyed a sensational IPL 2026 campaign. The teenager scored 776 runs at an extraordinary strike rate of 237.30 and finished as the Player of the Tournament. Despite his remarkable domestic form, Sooryavanshi did not feature during India's T20I series against Ireland, where the visitors suffered a surprising 2-0 defeat.
Former India wicketkeeper Saba Karim backed Sooryavanshi for an international debut, describing his IPL season as one of the finest in the tournament's history. Karim said the youngster had consistently dominated quality bowling attacks and expressed confidence that he would succeed at the international level. He added that cricket fans around the world are eagerly waiting to see whether Sooryavanshi can replicate his fearless batting in India's colours.
With four matches still remaining in the five-match T20I series against England, the spotlight remains firmly on India's team selection. Samson will be eager to silence critics by converting opportunities into significant scores, while Sooryavanshi's outstanding IPL performances continue to strengthen the case for his maiden international appearance. The decision taken by the team management in the coming matches is likely to remain one of the biggest talking points of the series.
