Sanju Samson Struggles Against Ireland As Selection Debate Intensifies

Sanju Samson’s poor performance sparks selection debate concerns.

Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar has issued a strong warning to wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson following India’s 34-run defeat to Ireland in the first T20I at the Civil Service Cricket Club, saying the player must remain alert as competition for places intensifies within the squad.

India suffered an unexpected collapse while chasing a challenging target, getting bowled out for 148 in 18.5 overs. The defeat marked India’s first-ever loss to Ireland in T20 internationals, ending an eight-match winning streak in the format against the Irish side. Despite a new-look team and fresh leadership, India’s batting unit struggled to build partnerships in difficult conditions.

Sanju Samson, opening the innings alongside Abhishek Sharma, managed just 5 runs off 4 deliveries before being dismissed by Ireland’s Jai Moondra. His early departure added pressure on the top order, which failed to recover as Ireland’s disciplined bowling attack, led by Matthew Holland and Matthew Humphreys, took three wickets each to dismantle India’s chase.

Speaking on Sony Sports Network, Sanjay Manjrekar said Samson must be “careful” given the rising competition for spots in the Indian squad. He specifically referenced young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, suggesting that emerging talent is now closely challenging established players for opportunities in the national side.

Manjrekar, however, also noted that Sooryavanshi’s inclusion might not have significantly altered the outcome of the match, pointing out that the target was too steep and the playing conditions were not conducive for aggressive batting. He added that even promising young players would have found it difficult to change the course of the game under such circumstances.

The defeat has raised questions about India’s batting approach in the series, with the team under new captaincy and experimentation in the playing XI. While Ireland celebrated a historic win, the result has also intensified scrutiny on senior and emerging Indian batters alike as competition for limited top-order spots continues to grow.
