Team India Delays Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Debut, Prioritises Samson And Abhishek Partnership

Sooryavanshi awaits debut as selectors back incumbents.

The question surrounding when 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will make his debut for India continues to dominate discussions among cricket fans. Despite earning a place in the national T20I squad through a string of impressive performances, the young opener is yet to feature in the playing XI, with the team management choosing to back experienced campaigners Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma. India's recent 0-2 T20I series defeat to Ireland has intensified scrutiny over team selection, but the management has indicated that it remains committed to giving its established players a longer run before considering changes.

Sooryavanshi travelled with the Indian squad for the two-match T20I series against Ireland but remained on the sidelines as Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson retained their places at the top of the order. While Abhishek provided a promising start with a knock of 49 in the opening T20I in Belfast, Samson endured a disappointing series, registering scores of just 5 and 0. India's batting struggles contributed significantly to the unexpected series defeat, prompting calls from fans and former cricketers for the teenager to be handed an opportunity.

However, the Indian team management appears in no hurry to alter its plans. Speaking after the Ireland series, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate made it clear that Sooryavanshi is considered ready for international cricket but stressed that player development also requires continuity and confidence. He defended the decision to continue backing Samson and Abhishek, saying the management believes in giving players an extended run rather than making reactive changes based on a short sequence of performances.

"He’s absolutely ready to play international cricket, there’s no doubt about it. But it’s also not a question to leave Sanju Samson out, a guy who went out of his way to win India the World Cup three months ago. A guy who had a fair IPL. It’s important to give players confidence. We want to give players a long run in the team," ten Doeschate said. His comments underline the team's long-term approach, with selectors and coaches preferring stability over frequent changes despite disappointing results.

The decision also reflects India's growing depth in T20 cricket, where competition for places remains intense across every batting position. Sooryavanshi's rapid rise through domestic and franchise cricket has established him as one of India's brightest young prospects, but he faces the challenge of breaking into a settled squad that includes experienced international performers. With a five-match T20I series against England scheduled next, opportunities could emerge depending on form, workload management and team combinations.

For now, patience remains the message from the Indian camp. While Sooryavanshi has impressed enough to earn national selection at just 15 years of age, the management believes his time will come when the circumstances are right. The continued backing of Samson and Abhishek Sharma suggests India is prioritising consistency and player confidence over immediate changes, even after a disappointing series in Ireland. Whether the teenager finally receives his maiden international cap during the England series will depend on how the current opening pair performs and whether the selectors decide the time is right to introduce one of the country's most exciting young talents.
