Vijay Government Explains Why Stalin Junior Was Arrested And Later Released

DMK MLA and Leader of Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, Udhayanidhi Stalin, was released from police custody on Tuesday, nearly four hours after his arrest over alleged "double-meaning" remarks that were claimed to be directed at actor Trisha Krishnan. The Madras High Court ordered his release after police completed their questioning in connection with the case. The court directed Udhayanidhi to cooperate with the investigation whenever required.

During the hearing, Advocate General Vijay Narayan, appearing for Thanjavur Police, informed the court that the police did not intend to seek his judicial custody. He said the purpose of taking the DMK leader into custody was only to question him and that he would be released on station bail. The controversy relates to remarks allegedly made by Udhayanidhi during a protest meeting on the Cauvery issue held in Thanjavur on Monday.

Following the speech, complaints were filed against him, with allegations that certain comments contained offensive references to actor Trisha. Udhayanidhi and the DMK have rejected the allegations, maintaining that the remarks were being misinterpreted. Police arrived at Udhayanidhi's residence in Neelankarai to question him in connection with the case. Following the development, party sources said an anticipatory bail petition was filed as a precautionary legal measure.

The matter later reached the Madras High Court, which directed authorities to release him after the completion of questioning. The Tamil Nadu government defended the police action, stating that the intention was limited to conducting an investigation and gathering information related to the complaint. The government's legal representative clarified before the court that there was no plan to arrest him for the purpose of seeking prolonged custody or sending him to judicial detention. The arrest and subsequent release have intensified political tensions between the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government and the opposition DMK.

The DMK has accused the government of targeting Udhayanidhi for political reasons, while authorities have maintained that the action was based on complaints received and followed due legal procedures. Udhayanidhi's release is likely to keep the issue alive in Tamil Nadu's political discourse, with both sides continuing to defend their positions. While the investigation remains ongoing, the High Court's direction requiring cooperation from the DMK leader ensures that police can continue their inquiry if further clarification or questioning is needed.
