Political Clash Errupts Over Cauvery as TN Minister Targets Karnataka CM Shivakumar

Political tensions between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka over the Cauvery river dispute intensified on Sunday after a senior minister in Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay's government launched a sharp attack on Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar. The remarks came just days after Vijay had proposed direct talks with Karnataka to address the long-standing water-sharing issue, marking a noticeable shift from conciliatory outreach to open political confrontation. The latest exchange has added a new political dimension to an issue that has historically strained relations between the two neighbouring states.

Tamil Nadu's Minister for Energy Resources and Law, R. Nirmalkumar, accused Shivakumar of acting in the interests of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) rather than following the leadership of his own party, the Congress. He alleged that the Karnataka Chief Minister was taking political directions from DMK leaders instead of the Congress high command. The remarks represent one of the strongest personal criticisms directed at Shivakumar by a senior member of the Tamil Nadu government since the new administration assumed office.

The comments are significant because they follow Chief Minister Vijay's recent attempt to establish a direct political dialogue with Karnataka over the Cauvery water-sharing dispute. Only days earlier, Vijay had proposed holding discussions with Karnataka to find a constructive solution to the recurring issue, signalling a willingness to pursue cooperation. The latest criticism from his cabinet colleague, however, reflects a harder political stance amid continuing disagreements over water sharing and inter-state coordination.

While Tamil Nadu had recently emphasised dialogue as the preferred path toward resolving the dispute, Sunday's remarks indicate that political differences continue to shape the discourse surrounding the Cauvery issue.
