TVK Files Complaint With NCW Over Udhayanidhi's Remarks on Trisha

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam has approached the National Commission for Women over remarks allegedly made by Tamil Nadu Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin about actor Trisha during a protest meeting. TVK described the comments as “deeply troubling and offensive” and sought action against the former deputy chief minister.

The controversy arose while Udhayanidhi was addressing a demonstration concerning the Cauvery water dispute. During his criticism of Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, a person in the crowd reportedly chanted Trisha’s name. Udhayanidhi paused and responded with what TVK described as an offensive double entendre, triggering widespread political criticism.

In its complaint to the NCW, TVK alleged that Udhayanidhi used double-meaning language and vulgar innuendo targeting a prominent woman following the audience chant. The party argued that such remarks from a major political platform could normalise the objectification and verbal harassment of women in public spaces.

TVK urged the commission to take cognisance of the incident and issue a notice to the DMK leader. It also demanded that Udhayanidhi offer Trisha an unconditional public apology for what it termed “objectifying and vulgar rhetoric.” The party further called for a police case over the alleged remarks and indicated that it was planning statewide protests.

TVK MLA Rhevanth Charan condemned the comment as unacceptable and accused Udhayanidhi of lowering the standards of political discourse. Tamil Nadu BJP chief spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy also criticised the remarks and demanded legal action against the Leader of the Opposition. Earlier reports said the incident had prompted criticism from both parties.

The controversy has renewed debate over the use of personal references and alleged gender-based innuendo in political speeches. Udhayanidhi’s response to the complaint was not included in the information available at the time of reporting. The NCW had also not announced whether it would issue a notice or initiate further proceedings.
