TMC Rejects JPC, Calls Process a ‘Farce’

Trinamool Congress boycotts JPC, calls bills unconstitutional.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has fiercely rejected the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) formed to examine three controversial bills proposing a framework for removing the prime minister, chief ministers, and ministers, labeling the process a “farce” and refusing to nominate any members. The bills, introduced in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, sparked chaos as opposition parties, led by TMC, protested their content, escalating tensions in Parliament.

The Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill 2025, the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill 2025, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill 2025 outline provisions to remove elected leaders arrested for 30 consecutive days on serious charges. Introduced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah just before the Monsoon Session’s close, the bills triggered an uproar, with TMC MPs charging toward Shah, tearing copies of the legislation, and clashing with ruling alliance members in the Lok Sabha.

“We oppose the 130th Constitution Amendment Bill at its introduction, and the JPC is a sham,” TMC declared in a statement, vowing to boycott the 31-member committee, comprising 21 Lok Sabha and 10 Rajya Sabha members. The JPC is tasked with submitting its report by the Winter Session, expected in late November 2025. TMC’s stance reflects broader opposition concerns, with leaders arguing the bills undermine democratic principles and constitutional safeguards.

The dramatic scenes in Parliament, marked by heated confrontations and torn documents, underscore deep divisions over the proposed laws. As the JPC prepares to deliberate, TMC’s boycott signals a broader opposition strategy to challenge the bills’ legitimacy, setting the stage for a contentious Winter Session.
