TMC MPs Protest ‘Manhandling’ in Lok Sabha Over Bills Targeting Arrested Leaders

TMC slams alleged chaos and physical altercations in Parliament over controversial leadership Bills.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs have escalated their concerns to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, submitting at least two formal letters protesting the chaotic scenes and alleged jostling in the House on Wednesday. The unrest occurred during the introduction of three contentious Bills aimed at removing the prime minister, chief ministers, or ministers arrested for 30 days on serious criminal charges.

According to a senior TMC leader, party MPs convened at their office in Samvidhan Sadan on Thursday morning to commend their colleagues for their steadfast presence during the tumultuous session. "All TMC MPs met in our party office this morning, and we congratulated our MPs who were in Lok Sabha yesterday for their sterling performance," the leader told PTI.

The letters, penned by TMC MPs Mitali Bag, Mahua Moitra, and Satabdi Roy, detailed the disorder, with the party alleging that their MP Abu Taher Khan, who is unwell, was "manhandled" during the melee. The TMC condemned the physical confrontations, accusing members of the ruling alliance of aggressive behavior.

The chaos erupted when Home Minister Amit Shah introduced the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025; the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025; and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025. These Bills propose that elected leaders detained for 30 consecutive days on charges carrying a minimum five-year sentence would lose their positions on the 31st day. Shah moved a motion to refer the Bills to a joint parliamentary committee, triggering an uproar.

TMC MPs tore copies of the Bills and flung them toward Shah, with MP Kalyan Banerjee attempting to grab the microphone in front of the Home Minister while shouting slogans. BJP members, including Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, rushed to intervene, leading to a face-off in the Well of the House.

The incident has intensified tensions between the ruling and opposition alliances, with the TMC demanding accountability for the alleged manhandling and disruption. The Bills, now under review by the joint committee, continue to spark heated debate over their implications for political accountability and governance.
