Ganesh Idol Immersion Made Easier with Thane’s New App

Eco-Friendly Visarjan Facilities Expanded

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has significantly expanded eco-friendly facilities for Ganesh idol immersion ahead of the 10-day Ganesh Chaturthi festival starting August 27, 2025, while launching an upgraded Green Immersion App to guide citizens to nearby visarjan sites. The initiative, announced on Saturday, aims to ensure a sustainable and organized immersion process in compliance with Bombay High Court directives, addressing environmental concerns and easing access for devotees.

The TMC has arranged immersion facilities at 134 locations across Thane, including 23 artificial lakes, 77 tank immersion systems, 15 mobile immersion units, nine creek ghat systems, and 10 idol acceptance centers, according to a civic release. Idols up to six feet must be immersed in artificial ponds to reduce pollution in natural water bodies, while those taller can be immersed at designated creek ghats. These facilities span ward committees like Shil, Naupada, Kalwa, Diva, Mumbra, Majivada, Lokmanyanagar, Wagle, and Vartaknagar, covering residential complexes, gardens, and community spaces.

To enhance accessibility, the TMC has introduced the revamped Green Immersion App, available at https://ecovisrjan.com via a QR code or link. The app provides real-time directions to the nearest immersion sites, including mobile units, and requires user registration for seamless navigation. “The app ensures devotees can locate eco-friendly visarjan points effortlessly,” said TMC Commissioner Saurabh Rao, as quoted by The Times of India. The civic body has also deployed manpower in two shifts, along with cranes and additional barges at creek ghats, to manage crowds and ensure safety.

The measures align with Thane’s push for sustainable celebrations, following the state’s ban on Plaster of Paris idols. Last year, TMC’s 114 immersion points, including 76 artificial tanks, facilitated over 80,000 immersions, per The Indian Express. Social media posts on X praise the app’s user-friendly interface but urge better maintenance of artificial ponds. With Thane expecting over one lakh devotees, the TMC’s proactive steps aim to balance tradition with environmental responsibility.
