Suvendu Adhikari To Be Sworn In As West Bengal Chief Minister Today
Suvendu Adhikari to take oath as Bengal Chief Minister
BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari is set to take oath as the Chief Minister of West Bengal today after being unanimously elected as the leader of the BJP legislature party, marking a major political development in the state’s leadership transition, according to the political announcement cited in the latest reports. Following his selection as the legislature party leader, Adhikari visited Raj Bhavan on Friday, where he met Governor R N Ravi and formally staked his claim to form the government. The Governor subsequently invited him to take oath as Chief Minister at the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata, where the ceremony is scheduled to be held later today under heightened political attention.
The swearing-in ceremony is expected to be a high-profile event, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and several chief ministers from NDA-ruled states likely to attend. The presence of top national leadership is being seen as a significant signal of political backing and organisational consolidation within the alliance at the state level.
Adhikari, aged 55, has had a long political journey marked by significant shifts in party affiliation and ideology. Once considered a close aide and influential organisational figure within the Trinamool Congress, he later moved to the Bharatiya Janata Party, where he emerged as one of the most prominent voices opposing West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. His political career began in student politics through the Congress-affiliated Chhatra Parishad during a period when the Left Front held strong influence in the state.

According to the announcements made by senior BJP leadership, including Home Minister Amit Shah, Adhikari’s name reportedly received unanimous backing through multiple proposals from party legislators. Shah described him as a seasoned leader with strong administrative understanding and noted his experience in political mobilisation and governance-related matters. Adhikari, in his address to party members and supporters, stated that the people of Bengal had delivered a “historic mandate” and emphasised that his government would work to fulfil commitments made during the election campaign.
The political transition comes in the context of recent electoral developments in the 294-member West Bengal Assembly, where the BJP has been cited as having secured a significant majority over its rivals. The Assembly has also been reported as dissolved following the completion of its term, marking the end of the previous legislative cycle and paving the way for a new government formation process.
Meanwhile, outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has raised objections regarding the electoral process, alleging irregularities in vote counting and describing the outcome as being influenced by external factors. She has also stated that she would not resign voluntarily, asserting that constitutional procedures should determine the course of action. The developments continue to intensify political tensions in the state as the leadership transition unfolds.
