Suvendu Adhikari Chosen BJP Legislature Party Leader Ahead Of Bengal CM Appointment

Suvendu Adhikari chosen BJP leader, set for Bengal chief ministership.

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Suvendu Adhikari was on Friday elected as the leader of the BJP legislature party in West Bengal, clearing the way for him to become the state’s first BJP chief minister following the party’s victory in the Assembly elections. According to party sources, Adhikari’s name was proposed during the BJP legislature party meeting and formally announced in the presence of newly elected BJP legislators and senior party leadership, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The development marks a historic moment for the BJP, which is set to form a government in West Bengal for the first time.

The swearing-in ceremony of the new government is scheduled to take place at Brigade Parade Ground on May 9. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and chief ministers from National Democratic Alliance (NDA)-ruled states are expected to attend the event. Earlier in the day, BJP’s West Bengal unit president Samik Bhattacharya had also reportedly backed Adhikari’s candidature for the chief minister’s post during internal discussions. Adhikari and Bhattacharya were considered the leading contenders for the role following the BJP’s strong electoral performance in the state.

Adhikari, often described within BJP circles as a key strategist behind the party’s breakthrough in Bengal, registered victories from both the Nandigram and Bhabanipur Assembly constituencies. In Bhabanipur, he defeated outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by a margin of more than 15,000 votes, making it one of the most closely watched contests of the election.

Discussions are also underway regarding the appointment of two deputy chief ministers in the new government. Party sources indicated that one of the posts is likely to be given to a woman leader, with Agnimitra Paul emerging as a strong contender after her victory from the Asansol Dakshin constituency. The BJP’s victory in West Bengal marks a major political shift in a state long dominated by the Trinamool Congress and previously the Left Front. Political observers view the result as one of the BJP’s most significant electoral gains in eastern India in recent years.
