DMK Targets Vijay Over UK Visit, TVK Defends Trip With Brand Tamil Nadu Argument

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has criticised Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s official visit to the United Kingdom after he attended actor-racer Ajith Kumar’s race at Silverstone, questioning the purpose of the trip. Vijay’s visit has been defended by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which described the engagement in the context of promoting “Brand Tamil Nadu”. The political exchange followed Vijay’s appearance at the Michelin Le Mans Cup race on Saturday, where he waved the ceremonial green flag before Ajith competed with his team.

The DMK questioned why the Chief Minister attended the race during an official overseas visit. The party’s criticism centred on Vijay’s presence at the Silverstone event and his meeting with Ajith, with opponents suggesting that the engagement was more about attending the race of a friend than advancing the state’s official interests. The remarks added a political dimension to Vijay’s overseas programme and highlighted the scrutiny surrounding his activities since taking office. The DMK has used the appearance to question whether the event was connected to the stated objectives of the government’s foreign engagements.

Vijay was in the UK as part of an official visit reportedly focused on attracting foreign investment to Tamil Nadu and studying sports infrastructure. One of the areas linked to the visit was the state’s proposed Motor Sports City near Chennai. His attendance at Silverstone was therefore presented by his party as having relevance to the broader development of motorsport and sports infrastructure in Tamil Nadu. Vijay’s participation in the event also provided an opportunity to observe an international racing venue and the organisation of a major motorsport competition.

During the race event on Saturday, Vijay waved the ceremonial green flag to signal the start of the Michelin Le Mans Cup race. Ajith Kumar, who is also a professional racing driver, competed in the event with his team. The presence of the Chief Minister at the race was subsequently debated as part of the wider political contest between the ruling establishment and Vijay’s TVK.

The TVK, however, defended Vijay’s interaction with Ajith and his participation at Silverstone, framing it as part of efforts to strengthen the image of Tamil Nadu internationally. The party invoked the idea of “Brand Tamil Nadu” to argue that the Chief Minister’s presence at an international motorsport event could help showcase the state’s ambitions in sports and related infrastructure. From the TVK’s perspective, the engagement was not simply a personal appearance at a friend’s race but could be viewed alongside Tamil Nadu’s proposed plans for a Motor Sports City and efforts to attract investment.

The dispute over Vijay’s UK visit reflects the political scrutiny surrounding the Chief Minister’s official engagements, particularly as TVK seeks to establish itself as a major political force in Tamil Nadu. The DMK has questioned the value of attending Ajith’s race, while the TVK has defended the visit by connecting the Silverstone appearance with Tamil Nadu’s sports and investment ambitions. Vijay’s participation at the Michelin Le Mans Cup, his ceremonial flag-off and the proposed Motor Sports City have therefore become part of a larger political debate over how official overseas visits should be evaluated.
