Congress Leader Rejects TVK's PM Push, Backs Rahul Gandhi Instead

Former Puducherry Chief Minister and Congress leader V. Narayanasamy has said the Congress will not be subordinate to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led alliance, while reiterating that Rahul Gandhi remains the Prime Ministerial candidate of the INDIA bloc for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. His remarks came amid statements by some TVK leaders backing Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay as a potential Prime Ministerial candidate for the next general election.

Addressing a press conference in Puducherry, Narayanasamy strongly defended Rahul Gandhi's position within the INDIA bloc. Responding to questions about TVK leaders supporting Vijay for the Prime Minister's post, the Congress leader said an alliance between political parties did not mean that the Congress had surrendered its independent political position. He made it clear that the party would continue to maintain its own stand on national political issues.

Narayanasamy said the Congress was not a "slave" to the alliance led by TVK, stressing that being part of an electoral arrangement did not prevent the party from asserting its political views. His comments came against the backdrop of growing political discussions in Tamil Nadu surrounding Vijay, who heads the TVK and is emerging as a significant political figure ahead of future elections.

The Congress leader also reiterated that Rahul Gandhi is the Prime Ministerial candidate of the INDIA bloc. The bloc brings together opposition parties that have sought to coordinate their electoral and political strategies against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party at the national level. Narayanasamy's statement indicates that the Congress continues to regard Gandhi as its preferred choice for the top post within the alliance.

The remarks also highlight potential differences that could emerge among parties seeking to work together in the run-up to the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. While alliances can involve coordination on electoral strategy and seat-sharing, individual parties may continue to promote their own leaders and political positions. The statements by TVK leaders in favour of Vijay have therefore prompted questions about how the alliance would approach the issue of leadership at the national level.

For now, Narayanasamy has maintained that the Congress's position remains unchanged, with Rahul Gandhi being projected as the INDIA bloc's Prime Ministerial candidate. At the same time, his comments underline that the Congress expects to retain its political autonomy within its alliance with TVK. The issue of who could emerge as a national leadership candidate is likely to remain part of broader political negotiations and discussions as parties prepare for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
