BJP Loses Datia Bypoll Despite Dropping Narottam Mishra as Candidate

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) suffered a significant setback in the Datia Assembly by-election despite replacing former Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra with a new candidate. Congress veteran Ghanshyam Singh defeated BJP's Ashutosh Tiwari, exposing the challenges the ruling party faced in managing leadership transition and internal dissent. The result highlighted that while the BJP changed its candidate, it struggled to distance itself from the political influence and organisational structure built around Mishra over nearly two decades.

The outcome was particularly symbolic in areas closely associated with Mishra's political base. Congress secured a lead even at the polling booth linked to the former minister, while the BJP also trailed at a booth connected to its district president. The party had denied Mishra a ticket following his defeat in the 2023 Assembly election, but the bypoll campaign remained heavily influenced by his presence. As a result, Ashutosh Tiwari's candidature was overshadowed by continued discussions about Mishra's political future rather than the BJP's attempt to project a new leadership.

Internal divisions became evident immediately after the BJP announced Tiwari's candidature. Supporters of Narottam Mishra staged protests, blocked roads and reportedly resigned from party positions, reflecting dissatisfaction over the ticket distribution. Although Mishra later campaigned extensively for the BJP and appealed to voters to support the party, the election narrative remained centred on his exclusion. Political observers noted that this left the BJP unable to fully convince either those seeking organisational change or loyalists unhappy with the leadership's decision.

In contrast, the Congress fielded Ghanshyam Singh, an experienced local leader with an established political network and longstanding ties to Datia. Having represented both Datia and Sewda in the Assembly, Singh entered the contest with strong grassroots support and a well-recognised public profile. Reports also suggested that dissatisfaction among sections of BJP workers may have reduced organisational enthusiasm during the campaign, although no definitive evidence has established the extent of any cross-voting or internal sabotage.

Voter turnout also reflected the nature of the by-election. Datia recorded a turnout of 71.44 per cent, notably lower than the nearly 80 per cent participation seen during the 2023 Assembly election. Despite deploying Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and other senior leaders while campaigning on development and the advantages of a "double-engine" government, the BJP was unable to mobilise sufficient support. Analysts pointed out that lower participation among women, despite the popularity of welfare schemes, highlighted the difference between support for government programmes and actual voter mobilisation on polling day.

The Congress victory is considered politically significant because it came despite internal factional differences within the party and against the backdrop of the BJP's traditionally strong performance in Madhya Pradesh by-elections. The result suggests that the BJP's attempt to introduce a new face while continuing to rely on the political structure built around Narottam Mishra created conflicting signals for voters. Ultimately, the Datia bypoll underscored the challenges of managing leadership transitions, organisational unity and electoral mobilisation, offering both major parties important lessons ahead of future political contests.
