Datia Bypoll Sees BJP-Congress Contest With Transgender Candidate In Focus
Datia election battle intensifies with a unique candidate.
The Datia Assembly by-election in Madhya Pradesh has turned into a major political contest between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress, with both parties treating the battle as a matter of prestige. After the withdrawal of nominations, 22 candidates remain in the electoral race. While the contest is largely centred around the BJP-Congress face-off, the entry of transgender leader Sanjana Singh Kinnar has brought additional attention to issues of representation and inclusion.
The BJP has fielded Ashutosh Tiwari for the bypoll, relying on its strong organisational network and efforts to regain control of a seat it lost in the 2023 Assembly elections. The Congress has nominated Ghanshyam Singh, aiming to retain the constituency despite the disqualification of its former MLA Rajendra Bharti. The by-election was necessitated after Bharti was disqualified under Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, following his conviction in a fraud-related case.
Datia became a closely watched constituency after the 2023 Assembly elections, when Congress leader Rajendra Bharti defeated former Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra by 7,742 votes. The victory ended Mishra's long-standing political dominance in the seat and marked a significant setback for the BJP. With the bypoll now underway, both parties are attempting to strengthen their position in the politically important Bundelkhand region.

For the BJP, winning the seat would help recover from its unexpected defeat in the previous Assembly election and reinforce its influence in the area. The Congress, meanwhile, sees retaining Datia as an opportunity to demonstrate that its voter base remains strong despite the circumstances that led to the by-election. The outcome is expected to be closely watched as an indicator of political momentum between the two major parties in the state.
Among the candidates attracting attention is Sanjana Singh Kinnar, who is contesting on a Bharatiya Gan Warta Party ticket. Although she is not considered a leading contender, her campaign has introduced discussions around transgender representation, political participation, and social inclusion. Her presence has added a different dimension to the election, particularly among sections of urban voters and younger citizens.
The Election Commission has scheduled polling for July 30, with vote counting set for August 3. A total of 22 candidates, including the NOTA option, are part of the electoral process. Since electronic voting machines can display only 16 names on a single ballot unit, polling stations will use two ballot units, and voters have been advised to check both units carefully before casting their votes.
