BJP-Led NDA Nears Sweep In Assam As Early Trends Cross 100-Seat Mark
Early Assam trends show BJP-led NDA crossing majority mark, Congress trailing significantly.
As counting of votes continued in the Assam Assembly elections, state Education Minister Ranoj Pegu on Monday said early trends indicate a strong and decisive lead for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), suggesting a potential sweep in the 126-member Assembly. He claimed the electorate had clearly endorsed the alliance’s development-focused governance model.
According to early Election Commission trends, the BJP and its allies crossed the majority mark comfortably, leading in 101 seats, while the Congress-led opposition alliance was ahead in 24 constituencies. These figures placed the NDA in a dominant position as counting progressed across multiple rounds, strengthening expectations of a return to power for the ruling coalition.
Reacting to the trends, Ranoj Pegu said voters had rejected what he described as “false narratives” propagated by the Congress during the campaign. He alleged that attempts to influence public opinion through misleading claims did not succeed, as voters instead chose continuity in governance under the BJP-led “double-engine” government at the Centre and in the state.

Pegu further stated that the results reflected a clear rejection of vote-bank politics and a strong preference for development-oriented leadership. He highlighted ongoing government efforts in infrastructure expansion, welfare schemes, and administrative reforms, saying these factors played a key role in shaping voter sentiment across Assam’s urban and rural constituencies.
The Assam Assembly elections were held on April 9 with an impressive voter turnout of 85.96 per cent, covering an electorate of more than 2.50 crore voters. A total of 722 candidates contested the elections, including 59 women. The BJP fielded 90 candidates, while its allies such as the Asom Gana Parishad and Bodo Peoples’ Front also participated as part of the NDA alliance.
On the opposition side, the Congress fielded 99 candidates and was supported by parties such as AIUDF, Raijor Dal, Assam Jatiya Parishad, CPI(M), and others. Several regional and national parties, including the Trinamool Congress and Aam Aadmi Party, also contested, making the election a multi-cornered contest, though early trends indicated a strong NDA advantage as counting continued.
