Assam Assembly Elections Results: Gaurav Gogoi Trails in Key Jorhat Constituency Counting

BJP leads Assam trends with 78 seats as Gaurav Gogoi trails in Jorhat counting.

Early counting trends in the Assam Assembly elections on Monday showed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) taking a strong lead across the state, while Congress state president Gaurav Gogoi was trailing in the high-profile Jorhat constituency after the fifth round of counting. The results indicate a challenging start for the opposition Congress in one of the most closely watched electoral battles in the state.

In Jorhat, BJP candidate Hitendra Nath Goswami maintained a significant lead over Gogoi, with early figures showing the BJP ahead by more than 8,000 votes. According to official trends, Goswami secured 23,339 votes while Gogoi polled 15,326 votes in the initial rounds of counting. The widening gap is being viewed as a setback for Congress in a constituency considered politically important.

Across Assam, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) appeared to be in a dominant position, leading in around 78 seats in early trends. The Congress-led opposition alliance, meanwhile, was ahead in approximately 25 constituencies. These numbers reflect only initial rounds of counting, with officials cautioning that trends may shift as more votes are processed throughout the day.

The counting process is being conducted under tight security arrangements across the state. Authorities said that clearer and more stable trends are expected as counting progresses into later rounds. The process has attracted significant attention due to the competitive nature of the election and the high voter turnout recorded during polling.

The Assam Assembly elections were held on April 9, recording an impressive turnout of nearly 85.96 percent from an electorate of over 2.50 crore voters. A total of 722 candidates are contesting across constituencies, including 59 women candidates. The BJP fielded 90 candidates, while the Congress put forward 99, making it one of the most extensive electoral contests in the state.

Other parties, including regional and national players such as the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Asom Gana Parishad, and several smaller regional outfits, are also part of the multi-cornered contest. As counting continues, political observers say the early trends suggest a strong position for the BJP-led alliance, while the opposition awaits further rounds for any possible shift in momentum.
