Pawan Khera Denied Anticipatory Bail By Gauhati High Court In Assam Case
Court rejects Pawan Khera’s bail plea in case linked to remarks on Assam CM Himanta Sarma’s wife.
The Gauhati High Court has denied anticipatory bail to Congress leader Pawan Khera in a criminal case stemming from his remarks about the wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The ruling marks a significant legal setback for Khera, who had sought protection from arrest in the matter.
The case originates from allegations made by Khera against Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, the chief minister’s wife. During a press conference ahead of elections in Assam, Khera claimed that Sharma held multiple foreign passports and possessed undisclosed overseas assets, including properties in Dubai and investments in shell companies. These allegations were strongly contested and subsequently led to legal action.
Following the remarks, Sharma filed a criminal complaint at the Guwahati Crime Branch police station. The case includes charges related to cheating, defamation, forgery of valuable documents and electronic records, and intentional insult. Authorities initiated an investigation, escalating the legal proceedings against the Congress leader.

The Gauhati High Court reserved its order after hearing arguments from both sides for nearly three hours earlier this week before ultimately rejecting Khera’s plea for anticipatory bail. The decision means Khera may now face arrest in connection with the case unless he secures relief from a higher court.
The matter has also seen proceedings in other courts. Earlier, Assam Police visited Khera’s residence in Delhi on April 7, but he was not present. He later approached the Telangana High Court and obtained interim transit anticipatory bail for a limited period. However, the Supreme Court of India intervened on April 15, pausing that relief and directing him to seek appropriate remedy in Assam.
Subsequently, Khera appealed to the Supreme Court to vacate its stay on the transit anticipatory bail, but the request was declined. The apex court reiterated that he should approach the Gauhati High Court for relief, leading to the latest ruling. The case now proceeds as legal scrutiny over the allegations and counterclaims continues.
