BJP Appoints Amit Shah and JP Nadda as Central Observers for Bengal and Assam

BJP appoints senior leaders as observers to oversee leadership selection in Bengal and Assam.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has appointed Union Home Minister Amit Shah as its central observer for the election of the party’s legislative leader in West Bengal, following the announcement of recent assembly election results. The move is part of the party’s internal process to formalise leadership decisions in newly secured or retained state governments. Shah’s appointment underscores the importance the party places on organisational oversight in key politically significant states.

In a parallel decision, the BJP named Union Minister JP Nadda as the central observer for the selection of its legislative party leader in Assam. The appointments come shortly after the party secured another term in Assam, reinforcing its position in the northeastern state. The observers are expected to oversee meetings of newly elected MLAs and facilitate consensus-based selection of the legislative leadership.

The party also appointed Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini as co-observer for the Assam legislative party leadership election process. His inclusion is seen as part of the BJP’s strategy to involve senior state leaders in organisational responsibilities beyond their home states. According to party sources, this helps ensure smoother coordination between central leadership and state-level representatives during post-election transitions.

For West Bengal, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has been named as co-observer alongside Amit Shah. His role will be to assist in supervising the legislative party meeting and help facilitate the selection process for the leader of the BJP legislature party in the state. The appointments highlight the party’s attempt to balance central oversight with regional leadership participation in important decisions.

The BJP’s internal notification follows its recent electoral performance, where the party managed to dislodge the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal while also retaining power in Assam for a third consecutive term. With government formation processes underway, the appointment of central observers is a standard organisational step aimed at ensuring discipline, consensus-building, and smooth transition of power within newly elected legislative units.
