Pradyut Bordoloi Delivers Dispur Win For BJP In Assam Assembly Election
Pradyut Bordoloi wins Dispur seat for BJP in Assam after switching from Congress ahead of elections.
In a significant political development in Assam’s Assembly elections, former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi, who recently switched allegiance to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has won the Dispur constituency by a decisive margin of 49,667 votes. Bordoloi secured 1,03,337 votes, defeating his former party colleague Mira Borthakur Goswami of the Congress, who polled 53,670 votes, along with independent candidate Jayanta Kumar Das.
Bordoloi’s victory is being viewed as one of the key high-profile wins for the BJP in Assam, especially given his long association with the Congress spanning over five decades. A two-time Lok Sabha MP from Nagaon in 2019 and 2024, he joined the BJP in mid-March, just weeks before the Assembly polls. His win in Dispur marks a notable political shift, reflecting both his personal electoral influence and the broader momentum of the BJP in the state.
The Assam election also saw strong performances from other BJP leaders, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma maintaining a commanding lead of over 80,000 votes in the Jalukbari constituency against Congress candidate Bidisha Neog. Sarma is set to retain the seat for a sixth consecutive term, reinforcing his strong political base in the region and consolidating the party’s position in Assam.

Early trends from the Election Commission indicated that the BJP had already secured 22 seats, further strengthening its lead in the state. Meanwhile, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) registered at least one win in Dalgaon, where its candidate Mazibur Rahman secured victory by a margin of over 28,800 votes. These results point to a mixed but BJP-favourable outcome across multiple constituencies.
The Congress, however, faced setbacks in several key contests. State Congress president Gaurav Gogoi lost from Jorhat, where BJP candidate Hitendranath Goswami won by a margin of 23,182 votes. Gogoi, who was contesting his first Assembly election after previously serving as a Lok Sabha MP from Jorhat, suffered a significant defeat in a constituency historically associated with his family’s political influence.
With several heavyweight victories and high-profile defections shaping the outcome, the Assam election results underline a continued consolidation of BJP’s position in the state. The combination of leadership strength, organisational gains, and key cross-party entrants like Bordoloi has further tilted the balance in favour of the ruling alliance in Assam’s evolving political landscape.
